Adobe CMM version 1.0 update 1 released on April 30, 2007.
The Adobe Color Management Module (CMM) provides methods to transform colors using industry standard ICC (International Color Consortium) color profiles.
The CMM is intended for users who wish to achieve consistent color workflows using a common CMM. The CMM is included in Adobe applications that use the Adobe Color Engine, a full Color Management System. However, the CMM component of the Adobe Engine has previously been unavailable to users in parts of their workflows that do not include Adobe applications.
The CMM can be used by applications that support selection of third-party CMMs. It can also be integrated into workflows using custom software to access the CMM APIs. See the Read Me document on Labs and in the CMM download for details.

We haven’t seen any widespread problems from updating Mac OS X 10.4 to 10.4.9, but if you should experience trouble, the first thing to try is reinstalling the update, but not from Apple Menu> Software Update. Instead, download the Combo updater from Apple’s website at: www.apple.com/support/downloads. Our normal practice is to download the Combo updater and run it INSTEAD of using Software Update. (After repairing permissions with Disk Utility and backing up, of course.)

Quark has come up with an unusual hybrid-language version of QuarkXPress aimed at publishers in the Canadian English/French markets. It provides user interfaces in both languages, and users can switch freely among them. Its spell checking and hyphenation engines include rules for French, English and International English, with manuals in both French and English.
QuarkXPress 7 Canadian Edition costs the same as the English edition ($749), as do upgrades from previous versions of QuarkXPress ($249). It will ship in the second quarter (sometime before July), and customers who purchase the U.S. English version between Jan 1 and Sept 30 2007 can exchange their license for the Canadian Edition at no charge.
Note: Quark has a similar Latin American Edition that features Spanish, Portuguese and International English.

Flash drive technology has been threatening to replace hard drive technology, and now we’re seeing the first viable choice: Samsung’s 64GB solid state drive. It has a 1.8″ form factor, which is the right size for an iPod, and considerably smaller than the 2.5″ drives used in laptops. It uses 1/3 the energy of a hard drive, weighs 1/4 as much, and is 4x – 6x faster. Samsung plans to start mass production by July, so it’s possible that these could appear in laptops this fall.

Some QuarkXPress 7 users on Intel-based Macs are having trouble printing, because the CUPS printing system built into Mac OS X behaves slightly differently with Intel-native applications such as QuarkXPress. EFI’s Fiery rips are affected by this bug, as are many other printers because many other printer vendors license EFI’s technology for their drivers. EFI has now released a CUPS Filter Update that should fix problems with many printers and Intel-native applications. It’s available at www.tinyurl.com/227mjw and in our April Software Closet.

Apollo is Adobe’s code name for a new cross-platform application development platform that could be more important for them than PDF has been. It runs equally on Mac OS or Windows, and lets developers use their existing Web development skills (Flash, Flex, HTML, JavaScript, Ajax) to build hybrid Internet-Desktop applications. The application runs on the desktop, so it has access to your computer’s resources. It also uses Internet strengths such as network and user connectivity, and streaming media. Its ease of development and cross-platform support promises a new generation of applications unlike anything we’ve seen.
Adobe has released a free alpha test version of Apollo, along with a Software Development Kit, technical articles, developer videos, and sample applications, plus an Apollo website with developer forums. In addition, Lynda.com has a free video training: “Apollo Alpha Preview” at www.Lynda.com.
