I1 Photo XT: A Complete Color Management Package

October 31st, 2007 by eric

logo_xrite.jpg

Review by Eric Berkow

Oh, for the days when we didn’t need all this gadgetry! Way back in the day type was set by professional typesetters using giant machines, and color artwork was actually separated by taking several filtered pictures of the artwork to create actual film separations! Here in the digital age, accurate color reproduction is available to almost anyone with a computer! All you need are a few tools to make sure that your equipment is accurate.

If you are trying for accurate color reproduction, you need a good set of color management tools. The i1Photo XT is a good place to start for most photographers/designers.

This color management package will calibrate and profile monitors, projectors, scanners, printers and digital cameras. Basically it can do everything a designer/photographer will need.

Design Guy, Episode 11, Getting A Handle on Creativity

October 27th, 2007 by philk

dg_logo128.jpgDesign Guy, here. Welcome to the show. This is the program that explores timeless principles of design and explains them simply.

Now, we’re talking about the creative process. And in earlier episodes, we discussed the preparation that precedes creativity, which namely takes the form of information gathering. In graphic design, there’s always a message at stake - one that we need to craft for an audience. So, we’re concerned early on with doing our homework. And once we’ve laid the groundwork for our project in this way, we’re ready to get creative. And, as we said last time, this can go well or poorly, depending on certain factors.

Seeing Spots

October 26th, 2007 by Andrew Shalat

leopard.jpgWith OS X 10.5 Leopard’s hundreds of new features, we’ll be reading about different tweaks and hidden commands for months to come. Forums will be awash with what’s the most useful, what’s the most useless applications and innovations. I must say that one of the most important updates I see coming is with iChat. Now I know most of us use iChat as a social thing, and the majority of us don’t leverage its instantaneous file transfers and quick response via voice, video or text, as much as I think we should. I use it for soft proofing with almost all of my clients, sending files, working through the comping process with designs, and text process with articles. I’m looking forward to being able to consult freely using my desktop instead of  my image, sharing desktops, changing backgrounds so that I can look like I’m on vacation rather than sitting glumly at my desk. Or perhaps the other way around. iChat, if you haven’t read yet, will add a plethora of new features in itself, that will make it a contender for your computing and business time. Blue screen, sharing desktop, showing videos, all these things that can help save us time as we design, and get approval on work. t will probably generate a whole new level of online adult entertainment as well. And that, as we all know, is what really drives technology.
