Just like any other drive, flash drives can be formatted for use on either Windows or Macs, and almost always arrive formatted for Windows. (Macs can read Windows-formatted drives, but Windows requires a third-party utility to read a Mac-formatted drive.)
You can use Apple’s Disk Utility (in Applications:Utilities) to reformat the drive for Macs. Under the Erase tab, choose Mac os Extended from the Volume Format pop-up menu. You can also give it a name – using your phone number is a good option in case you lose it. When you click the Erase button, all the data on the drive will be erased and the drive will be formatted for Mac OS.
The next time you copy files to or from the drive, you should see a speed improvement.

The Adobe Creative Suite 3 installer for Version Cue CS3 Server disables your Mac’s firewall so that it can configure new outgoing network ports, but it does not reactivate the firewall when it is finished — potentially leaving your Mac open to malicious attacks.

Version Cue CS3 Server is included with Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium, Design Standard, Web Premium and Web Standard. It is installed by default as part of the full Creative Suite 3 installation.

To re-enable the Mac OS X built-in firewall, do this:

1. Choose Apple menu> System Preferences.
2. Click the Sharing Preference Pane.
3. Click the Firewall tab.
4. Click the Start button to turn your firewall on. (If the button says Stop, your firewall is already running.)

Enabling your Mac’s built-in firewall is an easy way to help prevent unauthorized people from accessing your computer through your local network or through the Internet. If you don’t already have your Mac’s firewall turned on, this is a great opportunity to activate it.

We don’t know if Adobe is planning to change the Creative Suite 3 installer, but they are offering the same advice we are: check your firewall settings yourself.

You can view Adobe’s CS3 installer security advisory at www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb07-11.html

“We’ve heard from our members that remote support continues to be one of their favorite pieces of technology not only for increasing satisfaction but for upping the productivity of their agents,” said John Ragsdale, VP of Research for the Society for Service and Support Professionals (SSPA). But with so many remote support products on the market, how do you choose the right solution? A new webcast from Bomgar(TM) answers your questions.

Remote Support Roulette: Which Solution Do I Choose? features Ragsdale, Matt Healey, Senior Research Analyst IDC, and Joel Bomgar, Founder and CEO of Bomgar Corporation, in a discussion about the most important factors to consider when evaluating solutions, the key differentiators of the leading solutions on the market on the market, and how to choose the solution that suits your needs.

Healey provides an overview of the competitive landscape and major players in the market, Ragsdale gives insight into the industry drivers for remote desktop control technology and the key differentiating factors in selecting a vendor, and Bomgar offers information about the company’s unique appliance-based remote desktop control technology.

“Remote support is a very hot topic for customers, not just for companies. To me this is because the problems that are solved by remote support seem to be the key issues that customers are being very vocal about and what’s missing in many support organizations. We know that customer expectations are continuing to increase, customer patience is on the decline, and keeping those customers satisfied is a continually harder thing every year. If you keep just doing what gave you a great satisfaction score last year you will find that next year your customers are rating the same service lower. So, we’re constantly having to up the ante on what exceptional support means”, said Ragsdale.

There is no question that the demand for remote desktop control solutions is increasing and will soon be expected by all your customers. For more information on choosing the right solution so you can streamline support to your customers, increase agent productivity and improve first call resolution rates, watch Remote Support Roulette: Which Solution Do I Choose?

One in five people is now packing a laptop on vacation. Small business owners are especially likely to bring their computers on vacation, with 75 percent checking in by phone or e-mail at least once a day while on vacation. In addition, nearly half of small business owners consider downtime a guilty pleasure, forcing nearly one third to check in by phone or e-mail several times a day while on vacation.

“As a small business owner, I bring my computer on vacation out of necessity,” said Nancy Sartanowicz, president of Workplace Strategies, LLC in Medford, Mass. “The last thing I want to deal with while on vacation is a computer problem. What’s worse, small business owners like myself often don’t know where to turn to have their computer problems solved, especially when they’re away from home on vacation.”

Whether you’re taking your computer on vacation out of necessity or enjoyment, encountering computer problems during precious leisure time can be even more annoying than usual. support.com, a remote tech support service which provides consumers with Instant Technology ReliefSM from their frustrating computer issues, offers tips to people who want to spend more time enjoying their vacation and less time dealing with computer problems.

support.com recommends consumers and small business owners alike take simple steps to work smart and stay safe:

1. Take precautions against hackers when accessing wireless networks or “hot spots” on the road. Make sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date and check that you have a firewall installed on your computer. As an extra precaution, password-protect sensitive files and turn off “file sharing” on your computer.

2. When you do have downtime to work, make sure your laptop battery doesn’t give out on you. To extend the life of your battery, power down all non-essential functions, such as DVD players and wireless network cards. In addition, most laptops have other power saving functions which can be accessed by simply double-clicking on the battery icon on the toolbar.

3. Make the best use of your valuable vacation time by focusing only on the e-mail that must be addressed immediately. Set up message filters in your e-mail system so that you can more easily separate and identify messages that can’t wait from those that can. Consider setting up an automated e-mail message that shows you’re out of town and will be responding only to urgent messages.

4. Make sure your computer is performing its best to help avoid problems. Give your computer a tune-up by defragmenting your hard drive, getting rid of any spyware or malware, and deleting any programs you don’t use which might lengthen boot-up time or decrease performance.

“Some people take their computers on vacation so that they can have more leisure time to surf the Web or communicate with family and friends. For others, such as small business owners, it’s a choice between taking their computer on vacation and not having a vacation at all,” said Eleanor Lacey, vice president of corporate development responsible for support.com. “No matter the case, the last thing that anyone wants to do is deal with a computer problem while on vacation. These steps can help ensure that they can enjoy as much of their leisure time as possible.”

Written by Stephen Bayley, one of the world’s best known commentators on modern culture and Terence Conran, one ofthe world’s leading designers and arbiters of taste, this book pays tribute to the leading names, movements, materials and processes such as furniture, fashion, cars, graphics, products, signs and symbols. The book combines essential facts with authoritative opinions – everything, as the industrial designer Raymond Loewy once said, from a lipstick to a steamship – butbrought right up to date. A series of essays begin by introducing how design has its place in modern cultural history including Terence Conran’s definition of design. The main section of the book comprises an A-Z of iconic people, products and processes from 20th century to the present day with biographies of leading designers from pastand present, as well as corporate histories, product appraisals, and witty accounts of relevant management, cultural and social theories. A major appendix has Bayley and Conran assessing the up and coming designers of today and finally a chapter on branding concludes with a provocative methodology to assess brand value. Beautifully designed and beautifully written, “Design: Intelligence Made Visible” is simply the indispensable guide to the contents of the modern world.

Explore the many powerful tools in Adobe® Illustrator® CS3 and discover techniques for creating vivid, engaging, and imaginative visual effects in this online course by Corey Barker, education and curriculum developer for NAPP and contributing writer for Layers magazine.

This class is perfect for graphic designers and digital artists who want to unlock the incredible potential of Illustrator CS3, and take their work to a whole new level of creativity. Adobe® Illustrator® CS3 Down & Dirty Tricks is the fastest and easiest way to learn the fundamental tips and tricks you need to become a vector graphics guru.

Here’s how it works:

Tuition for the 21-day course is only $69.99, or just $49.99 if you’re a member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP). To register, click the “ENROLL ME” button and fill out the short registration form. Your 21-day online course will begin the day that you enroll.

Once you’re enrolled, visit the website each day to download the class materials you’ll be working with (typically an image and a PDF outline of the day’s class. Then, watch the class session (each class lasts approximately five minutes) and follow along using the image provided…or use one of your own.

Missed a day? No problem! You can catch up on missed lessons at your convenience. So, if you missed Tuesday’s class – you simply make it up on Wednesday. If you miss both Tuesday and Wednesday classes, then on Thursday you can do all three. It’s just that easy.

It’s the perfect way to learn at your own pace, on your own time. Best of all, your tuition entitles 60-days of access to your online class, so you can replay specific clips or even repeat the entire course if you like.
