Facing pages in InDesign
philk
We had a discussion about this on Inside Mac Radio the other day. Here’s the basic idea. When you first set up a multi-page document in Indesign, you are asked to decide if you want it as facing pages or not. Odds are, you will. That’s why you’re using Indesign and not Word. You want this thing to have a page layout. But, unless you’re going to a professional offset printer for your multi-page project, or even if you just need to get a readable proof to a client, you won’t want to have that single first page hanging out there in your layout.
So here’s a simple way of making a facing page layout, using spreads, that you can keep as a template for future use.
Open a new document in inDesign. Give it 3 pages, make sure to check Facing Pages.

Now all the work you’re going to do here is in the Pages palette. Select page 2, then shift-click to select page 3 as well.
Select the disclosure triangle, and choose Keep Spread Together. (See figure Indesign2).

Next, while still in the Pages palette, select Page 1. Click the trash icon at the bottom right of the palette.
You now have facing pages, as a spread. If you want to have more spreads, go back to the disclosure triangle, and select Duplicate Spread.

The next thing to do is save this document as a template, and you won’t have to go through these steps again.
